Favourite thing #3
When I was living in Santa Monica in 2002, we lived next door to a group of girls who were in a band named Raining Jane. (I’d link to them right here but I don’t know how to link within text yet - shut up haters). Being great neighbours, while also satisfying our need to consume alcohol on an almost nightly basis, we would gleefully trot to the Temple Bar (another bloody link needed here) to watch the girls play. It didn’t hurt that the Temple Bar was literally around the corner from our house and that the Mojitos were the best this little puppy has ever consumed.
Raining Jane normally opened for a girl named Sara Bareilles. And she would blow the crowd away. It was just this little person with her keyboard and she would sing original songs that simply kicked ass. Seriously.
At the time I didn’t really think of it in this way, but we were lucky to get to hang with her from time to time and see her perform in these extremely intimate settings because this girl has now blown up in the States. Her video apparently is all over MTV and VH1 - which kind of confuses me because those stations weren’t playing anything other than reality shows when I left for Europe, but maybe they’ve gone back to their roots? - and on a site that shall remain nameless, everyone and their dog is downloading her single “Love Song”.
My favourite is actually “Fairytale” - which needs to be procured from above-mentioned site as it’s not on her album - about Cinderella and Snow White, etc… but I’m just so dang happy she’s finally living it large that I’d listen to her singing Kumbaya at this point.
